Resveratrol Supplement Extends Lifespan

ResveratrolResveratrol is found in grapes, red wine, blueberries, cranberries, peanuts and various other plants. Resveratrol (3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene) belongs to a class of polyphenolic compounds called stilbenes. Some types of plants produce resveratrol and other stilbenes in response to stress, injury, fungal infection, and ultraviolet radiation. It is part of the plants immune system.

Scientists became interested in exploring potential health benefits of resveratrol in 1992 when its presence was first reported in red wine, leading to speculation that resveratrol might help explain the “French Paradox”.
The “French paradox” says that a person can eat a lot of fat, yet not get heart disease.

More recently, reports on the potential for resveratrol to inhibit the development of cancer and extend lifespan in cell culture and animals have continued to generate scientific interest. Subsequent experiments on fruit flies, worms and fish confirmed the natural compound's ability to not only extend lifespans, but to delay the debilitating effects of aging.
In the recent fish study, the fish fed resveratrol supplement not only lived 50% longer than unsupplemented fish, older fish exhibited a degree of vivaciousness and mental acuity of fish much younger. Female fish fed with resveratrol supplement were even reproducing, with healthy offspring, after the control group of fish were already dead.

In a study published in Free Radical Research, resveratrol was put to the test against vitamin E and a synthetic antioxidant. All three were very good at scavenging artery-damaging radicals, but resveratrol emerged as the best defense against certain types of free radicals. Resveratrol supplementation also stops the proliferation of cells in blood vessels that narrow the arteries and keeps blood cells from sticking together.

Although the research is very preliminary, studies indicate that resveratrol may be particularly important for those at risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The brain is composed mostly of fatty acids, and just as the heart needs to be protected against oxidized fat, so does the brain.

Super Fruit FormulaIn a widely publicized report, researchers at Harvard Medical School and BIOMOL Research Laboratories have demonstrated that resveratrol activates a “longevity gene” in yeast that extends life span by 70%. The effects mimic those of calorie restriction, the only proven way of extending maximum life span.
Resveratrol activates one of the same “sirtuin (SIR)” genes as calorie restriction. Resveratrol’s ability to activate the gene has to do with its chemical structure, not its antioxidant potential. Resveratrol also has been tested for its ability to stop pain, stop the growth of the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers that can lead to cancer (Helicobacter pylori), protect immune cells, protect DNA, protect against skin cancer, and many other conditions.

A lot of the research on wine extract has been done only in test tubes or rodents, the sheer volume suggests that resveratrol is one of the most versatile and effective plant compounds discovered so far. And, resveratrol supplementation has been shown to drastically increase lifespans in all animals it's been tested on, from yeast, to fruit flies, to fish, and now to mice. Will it work on us?

The only sure way to obtain a certain amount of resveratrol daily is to take a standardized extract which ensures a consistent amount of high quality resveratrol supplement.
